WHEN WE ARRIVED at the gates, I could see many other carriages already gathered. “Is there going to be a ball tonight?” My dress was filthy, plastered with dirt and spilled wine, and blood clung to the hem.

I thought about what I would wear, when he abruptly said “No.” I looked at him puzzled, as our carriage pulled to a stop.

“You will be returning to your room and will remain there for the rest of the night.” More carriages pulled in around us and nobles spilled out, laughing and falling over each other, clearly not done for the night. I saw Lady Lovatia step out of her carriage, but she was no longer wearing her attire from earlier, but just an elegant night robe. I looked back at the king with a frown.

“For once, will you just obey?”

“For once? I haven't been allowed to do anything else.” The laughing face of the man I had danced with disappeared, and that ice cold demeanor he threw on so well returned.

“Interesting. I consider throwing yourself off a cliff very much doing exactly what you want, damning the consequences.”

“So, one taste of freedom and then back in the cage. A fitting punishment indeed.” He looked more taken aback than when I had slapped him.

“You have never been a prisoner here, Tori.” His use of my name struck me like a wave in a storm, but it couldn’t stop the flames of rage building inside me.

“Oh, I suppose the constant guard and locked doors were for my safety, were they?”

“Of course! You have no idea how dangerous this world is for you, how it would destroy something as precious as you.” Some of that softness returned to his gaze, but I couldn’t stand it, so I attacked.

“The only thing that’s ever been a danger to me has been you! You stole me from my home, you dragged me here, you…you let him kill my mother!”

It had been too far. I had always gone too far. His face was blank.

“Abraxas, I—”

He threw open the carriage door, and two guards stepped up. He pushed past them and left me behind. They escorted me out. He turned back to me for one brief look.

“Stay in your room tonight,” was all he said and then he stormed into the castle.

The guards escorted me to my room, and I formulated a plan.
